On Teamspeak, with all channels turned off. Seriously. For me, it was the constant use of Public channel to sell or advertise services. Apparently they've fixed that now. If my guildmates are not on, however, I typically do join PUGs.

Guild chat, Alliance chat, how often do you really talk to stranger? But seriously though, if I want to be social I would just go to the pub with my friends.

Pugs == Fail Mission
Heroes + Henchies == Master. Then again that would be the opinion of the most experienced players. Though for instance if I have to do the first 2 missions of Cantha, I will and try out low lvl people. Then again nobody responded when I said, who wants the help of a lvl 20 paragon + hero's.

Guilds are the way to go for social interaction in game. Most people shut local chat off.
Make sure you check out the guild you join. Check out their web page, if they don't have one, check to see if they are chatting away in Team/Vent speak or on Guild/Alliance chat, if not then you might want to find another guild. Especially if you're a new player. If you're interested in PvE then make sure the guild you join is PvE oriented, same for PvP. The last thing you want to do is join a PvP guild if all you want to do is PvE or vice versa.
Not trying to recruit you but google Wizardry Players Guild it is a guild I ran across that is PvE and family oriented and is active. I'm sure there are lodes more guilds that you would like. Look around and take your time.

ok...
So I get that it's all in guild...makes sense since the game is called GUILD wars. Tracking down a good guild seems like a trick though. There are so so so many.
I joined a guild the other day but usually it's completely quiet. Well since they aren't any fun I'll keep looking. I just like chatting while I play. I don't need a pug since even with henchmen I'm pretty effective. I have a LOT of experience with online games. So I'm not looking cuz I need a group. I just want to play and socialize. So any suggestions?
I play a lot while I work. I'm a programmer for NBC and I work remotely so I have a lot of free time but I still need to be at my computer so I play guild wars. I'm 33 so I'm fairly mature but I like lively fun people cuz I'm not as mature as I probably should be for my age. Don't worry I'm not rude or inappropriate. I like pve and although I haven't tried pvp in guild wars historically I've loved it in other games. So any good ideas on which guild I should go for?

I was given a dead guild with a 3/4 full hall at christmas. I love to chat, but it seems my twisted humor chases people away from joining. lol oh well. someday.... i will have more. until then, it just me. Btw, i do AB and try to keep the faction around 100k.(yes, all by myself)

That's because people suspect money is involved. If you're going to advertise help, you're best advertising it's free.

I chat too alot during the game Jenks.
When I played EQ2 it was similar. Local chat was usually quite and in group chat I was the one doing most of the talking. I think there are a lot of introverted gamers out there.
It's funny, outside of the game I'm not very talkative, but in the game I blab away with silliness all the time.

Other than the obvious advice about guilds already given, and the hint to look at the Guild adverts here at GWG, the only thing I can really say is that a large group of people may still be messing around with GW:EN, the new expansion. It's been out for a month already, but I'm sure lots of people are still going at it rather than returning to old stomping grounds.
And after that it may depend on what campaign you have, as certain areas in the campaigns are more populated/popular than others.
But that's just my two cents

You'll usually have to stick to D1 Local district of yours at certain times in big cities (gold dots when you zoom out of the map) to find people who just stand around and chat, while ignoring the spammed trade ads. You'll find people eventually, though like other people have said, an active guild is the best way to go.
While I've had some conversations with people in Local, going with a PUG usually has a bit too much of a risk, though I still do anyway. Not ALL players rage quit, flame, or are just plain clueless and won't accept advice, but when it happens, that sticks out more :P

Apart from Henchmen and Heroes, there is another reason that GW is less sociable then other MMOs. Due to the very basics of it's design, Guild Wars doesn't create a group of people that you get to know as you level, like WoW and other MMOs do. Without actively trying to, I kept running into the same people from level 1 to level 70. We all kinda' knew each other. That is something you will never find in GW. The game just doesn't promote it.

Yep, the instanced design promotes this.
Besides that, most "veteran" players have already some friends and trusting PUGs or other players usually does not work as well as playing with people you know. They are rather a pain than a help.
Being a starter now that GW is a rather old game and at the end of its lifecycle is surely not easy.
TBH: I would not starting playing GW now.

Its the Heros and all the expirienced players, Its not that their are not enough people to get to know its everyone who has played the game for a long time knows that when there logged on they have a aggenda, another factor is your just now starting to play the game their are not too many people starting new new as you are like their was when GW first hit the market.
